Done!

The rugs I've been working on since January are done! here you can see them in my hall fresh off the loom. (I found out from another weaver that I really should have pressed them first, but my enthusiasm to throw out the old ones got the best of me).  Below, you can see the work in progess, still on my loom in an Indian Saddle Blanket motif.  This was the second rug I wove. They are both weft faced rugs woven on 8/5 carpet warp. All the wool is handspun fourply.

In progress
To the right is a locker hooking project in progress. I used roving from fleece I had processed some years ago. White wool from Elihu Farm was dyed using the warm primary colors red and turquoise blue.  For the green I used a blend of red and sun yellow and for the purple, turquoise blue and red. The brown is a natural sheep's brown and comes from one of Floya's Lincoln crosses. I finished this rug, but unfortunately, I don't have a finished picture of it before we started walking on it. My store bought throw rugs are ready for the trash, so I've been busily producing new ones. This might also be my one and only locker hooked project now that I've discovered how much fun it is to weave a rug.

 Hooked on yarn

The rug to the left is hooked almost entirely with my handspun--most of it left over from other projects. The exception is the sky, a lovely mix of blues, which is handpainted yarn by Done Roving of Charlotte, Maine. The sheep has the only yarn spun for this project--Icelandic wool from one of Pat's sheep.  Though rugs are often hooked with strips of wool, as a knitter and weaver, I can't justify cutting up perfectly good fabric when there is plenty of yarn around.  One of the beauties of hooking with handspun is the potential to design yarns specifically for a project.  The pattern was purchased from Hollyhock Hill Designs in Indiana and is called "Sheep in the Hollyhocks."
